Audi India has launched the all-new TT Coupé in the domestic market, priced at Rs 60,34,000 (ex-showroom Delhi and Mumbai). This is the third generation of Audi’s revolutionary sportscar, which was first launched back in 1998.
The new TT Coupé is based on a modified version of Volkswagen’s MQB platform — it uses a lot of aluminium, which has helped shave off 50kg from the outgoing model, despite riding on a 37mm longer wheelbase. The car is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that develops 227bhp and 37.7kgm of torque and comes mated to a six-speed dual-clutch DSG gearbox which sends power to all four wheels via Audi's Quattro AWD system.
“Re-engineered for more power, the all-new TT Coupé blends dynamic aesthetics with innovative technology and inspired performance. A design icon, the all-new Audi TT Coupé combines classic TT DNA with that of the legendary Audi Sport models. A pleasure to drive, the futuristic interiors with brushed aluminium inlays, finely stitched leather sports seats, and innovative Audi virtual cockpit embody the sportiness, progressiveness and sophistication of the Audi brand and is the perfect car for our young and dynamic customers in India,” said Joe King, head, Audi India.
“Both our product launches of 2015 - the limited edition Audi R8 LMX and the all-new Audi TT Coupé have a strong sporty flair. This highlights Audi’s heritage in sportscars, our leadership in this segment in India and our seriousness towards this ultraluxurious and indulgent market space. We are gearing up with other surprises on the product front this year,” added King.
Audi has been on a roll in India since the past few years. After topping the sales charts in calendar year 2014 by selling 10,851 cars, the German carmaker sold 11,292 units in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2015. It sold 10,126 units during the previous fiscal year (2013-14). This translates into a year-on-year growth of 11.5 percent.
With this performance, Audi India has edged past Mercedes-Benz India by a small margin of 79 cars. Mercedes-Benz India sold 11,213 cars during FY2014-15. BMW, the third player in the German troika, has not shared its India sales numbers as yet.
However, Mercedes-Benz India reportedly was ahead of Audi India for the January to March 2015 quarter by a margin of 427 cars. It sold 3,566 units in Q1, FY2016. The coming months will see the race in the luxury car market intensify even more as manufacturers look to introduce new models as well as increase localisation levels to be more cost competitive.
With the new TT Coupe, Audi India's stable stands expanded to 18 cars. The Audi model range in India includes the A3 Sedan, A3 Cabriolet, A4, A6, A7 Sportback, A8 L, Q3, Q5, Q7, S4, S6, RS 5 Coupé, RS 7 Sportback, all-new TT Coupé, R8, R8 Spyder, R8 V10 plus and R8 LMX.
