The race to achieve BS VI-emission norm compliance is underway in the Indian market. With barely 16 months to go before the new emission upgrade kicks in, the engineering and R&D departments at automakers and their component suppliers across vehicle segments are hard at work.
Chennai-based commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland today announced that it has achieved its internal milestone for the full range of M&HCVs en route to meeting the BS-VI emission norms.
Dr N Saravanan, senior vice-president, Product Development, Ashok Leyland, said, "We are pleased to share that we have now achieved our internal milestone on emission capability for our entire range of M&HCV vehicles. Our new technology continues to build upon the successfully proven iEGR engine platform. We are now well on track in our preparedness for the 2020 launch."
Ashok Leyland had first unveiled its Intelligent Exhaust Gas Recirculation (iEGR) technology over a year ago. The technology, according to the company, which is upgradable to BS VI, is a simple yet innovative solution that helped it achieve the desired results to meet BS IV emission norms, which were implemented in India from April 1, 2017.
Ashok Leyland claims this technology is not only better suited to Indian conditions compared to Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology (based on European technology) but will also prove to be hugely cost effective, easy to operate and hassle-free to maintain, thereby resulting in improved total cost of ownership and better margins compared to products by OEMs which are based on SCR technology.
