ASDC signs 4 MoUs to enhance quality of automotive skilled training

Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC) has signed four Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance its capacity and capabilities in providing a variety of learning modules and international level certifications for automotive servicing and curriculum building along with faculty training to meet global standards.

The MoUs are with Electude International, The International Motor Institute of UK, MGR University and Centre for Polytechnic and Advanced Training. ASDC is an industry-led initiative promoted by ACMA, SIAM and FADA jointly with NSDC and the government of India to enhance the skills of the automotive industry. The MoUs were part of ASDC’s annual conclave held today in Chennai today.

Addressing the audience industry experts, which comprised over 250 senior HR experts and professionals from the automotive industry and training institutes, Ms P Amudha, Labour Secretary of Tamil Nadu, said: "Tamil Nadu has 539 technical training institutes and more than 400 ITI institutes which churn out 150,000 students every year, but it’s sad to see that the industry still finds it difficult to get properly trained people. This difference can only be bridged by improving the quality of the training.”

She added, “It is important that the young generation in the country put in their hearts to the jobs that they are performing in addition to their hands and minds. This alone will bring in the sense of pride in what they are doing, leading to high quality performance which is critical in leading the country to a leadership position in the world of manufacturing.”

Bharat Joshi, deputy high commissioner of the UK, who was the chief guest, lauded the increasing level of cooperation in the area of skilled development. He emphasised that the success of British manufacturing is mainly due to the high level of skilled manpower and highly effective system of skill development institutionalised in the UK, making it an ideal partner for India.

Vinod Dasari, president of ASDC and MD of Ashok Leyland, highlighted the rapidly accelerating pace of growth in the automotive industry not only in its size but more importantly in the scope of the industry. He recounted the unprecedented growth in the industry that has taken place during 2006-2016 and mentioned that the second AMP from 2016-2026 lays down a far more ambitious plan for the industry with even higher levels of expectation. These expectation and targets can only be fulfilled with increasing stream of highly skilled workforce in the area of manufacturing and services.
