Motherson Sumi Systems among Volkswagen Group’s top 19 suppliers for 2017

India’s Motherson Sumi Systems is among 19 top suppliers who have been awarded by the Volkswagen Group for their innovative strength and entrepreneurial reliability.

Motherson Sumi Systems, the largest auto ancillary in India, is one of the world’s fastest growing specialised automotive component suppliers and has a diverse global customer base comprising of almost all leading automobile manufacturers. The company has a presence in 33 countries across six continents. Motherson Sumi Systems recorded a turnover of Rs 41,985 crore in FY2017.

The company, which has had a longstanding association with the Volkswagen Group, supplies a wide variety of components to the German automaker including its sister automakers, Audi and Porsche.

With its two acquired entities, namely Samvardhana Motherson Peguform (SMP) in Germany and Samvardhana Motherson Reflectec (SMR) in the UK, the supplies range from exterior and interior polymer modules, comprising injection moulded parts like painted bumpers, dashboards, door panels and instrument panels. The reflective business, having a 28 percent share in the company’s revenues sees exterior mirrors, interior mirrors and blind spot detection systems being manufactured and supplied to the Volkswagen Group.

Following a sound growth trajectory, MSSL grew its overseas business in FY2017 by bagging new orders worth Rs 29,425 crore (+14%). It envisions a 5-year roadmap to grow organically while making new acquisitions along the way, to scale up its consolidated revenues from $5.7 billion in FY2016 to $18 billion by FY2020.

Honouring the best  
On June 28, at a ceremony held in Berlin, the Volkswagen Group presented the Volkswagen Group Award 2017 to its best suppliers. Before an audience of some 270 guests from 25 countries, Matthias Müller, CEO of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, and Dr. Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz, Group Board of Management member with responsibility for Procurement, handed over the 19 awards to this year's top Group suppliers.

Group CEO Matthias Müller talked about partnership and the transformation of the automotive industry in his speech: "We must make further progress together and become better and better. Never before have not only the pressure, but also the opportunities been as great as they are today. If we are willing to change, we can successfully master the transformation in our industry." Müller underlined that e-mobility and battery technology, autonomous driving, digitalisation throughout the value chain, and new mobility services are not passing trends: "That is the future of our industry – our common future. Thank you for your willingness to explore new pathways with us."

Garcia Sanz said: "A strong and uncomplicated partnership network based on a level playing field where information is exchanged almost in real time is essential to our success. And this must above all be a network that stands for transparency, openness and courage."

This is the 15th time that the Volkswagen Group has honored its best suppliers of the previous year for their innovative strength, product quality, development competence, sustainability, and professional project management. This year, the Group also recognised achievements in the new mobility solutions category for the first time.
