Yamaha Motor Co has launched the new Free Go family-oriented 125cc scooter in the Indonesian market. The Free Go is manufactured and marketed by group company PT Yamaha Indonesia Motor Manufacturing (YIMM). The company is targeting sales of over 100,000 units in the first year of sales.
In addition to the standard model, variants include the I Version with the Stop & Start System and the Smart Key system, as well as the A Version that includes ABS brakes.
The three Free Go variants are the Free Go LTK125 (18,500,000 rupiah / Rs 89,488), Free Go S LTK125-I (19,700,000 rupiah / Rs 95,292) and Free Go S LTK125-A (22,500,000 rupiah / Rs 108,837). These prices are ex-showroom Jakarta with Indian rupee conversion.
The new scooter is powered by a Blue Core 125cc engine, which focuses on high combustion efficiency, high cooling performance, and loss reduction. The Free Go has been developed based on what Yamaha says is the concept of a ‘compact scooter for family comfort’, and balances elegant styling with highly-usable, practical performance.
Its main features include a lightweight engine and produces low vibration, a smart motor generator which combines startup with power generation functionality to deliver quieter starts while also reducing power generation loss, a well-sized and comfortable 720mm-long seat, a front fuel port, removing the need to open and close the seat when refueling, generous large-capacity (25 litres) underseat storage space, and LCD instruments.
Yamaha bullish on scooter market
As in India, scooters are an immensely popular mode of transportation and account for an overwhelming 83 percent of the Indonesian two-wheeler market, which is among the largest in the world.
The Indonesian two-wheeler market has a total scale of approximately 5.8 million units annually, of which the scooter market accounts for approximately 4.8 million units or nearly 83 percent.
Will the Free Go come to India?
Like the Indonesian market, scooters are very popular in India and recent months have shown consumer preference for higher-powered 125cc premium scooters. Honda with its Grazia, TVS Motor Co and its NTorq, Suzuki 2Wheelers India with the Access and more recently Hero MotoCorp with its Destini 125 are all fighting for honours in the fast-growing 125cc scooter market in India. '
