Volvo Cars has revealed its new premium saloon S90 ahead of its public debut at the Detroit motor show in January.
Volvo is better known for its SUVs and estates, but with the launch of the S90, the Swedish carmaker is intent on exploring the premium sedan segment as well.
Commenting on the company’s new product Håkan Samuelsson, president & CEO, Volvo Car Group said, “With the launch of the XC90, we made a clear statement of intent. We are now clearly and firmly in the game. With US$ 11 billion of investment over the past five years, we are now delivering on our promise of a resurgent and relevant Volvo Cars brand.”
Built on the same platform as the new XC90, the Volvo S90 comes equipped with an advanced semi-autonomous drive feature, Pilot Assist. The system gives gentle steering inputs to keep the car properly aligned within lane markings up to motorway speeds of around 130 km/h and no longer needs to follow another car.
The car will also come with a T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain, luxurious interiors and connected infotainment systems. In India, the car will come with a 2.0-litre diesel engine, the same as the XC90. It is expected to drive into India in the festive season next year.

On the inside, we have taken the S90 to the next level, delivering a high-end luxury experience that promises comfort and control,” said Thomas Ingenlath, senior VP design at Volvo Car Group.
Dr Peter Mertens, Senior VP, Research & Development at Volvo Car Group further added, “The S90 has taken a big stride forwards in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. We have completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort.”
The new S90 will compete against the likes of BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class, and the India-bound Jaguar XF.
