Tata Motors South Africa, a subsidiary of Tata Motors, has annouced rollout of its 5,000th commercial vehicle from its assembly facility in Rosslyn, Pretoria.
The milestone vehicle, a Tata Primer Tipper 2528.k, was handed out to a customer at a ceremony held in the facility. The event was inaugurated by Ruchira Kamboj, the High Commissioner of India to South Africa.
Commenting on the occasion, Rudrarup Maitra, vice-president, Commercial Vehicles, International Business, Tata Motors, said, “It is quite befitting that Tata Motors South Africa has achieved this important landmark in the year when the Tata Group is celebrating its 150th anniversary since its establishment.”
Len Brand, executive director and head (Distribution Vertical) of Tata Africa Holdings, said, “From starting operations in Zambia in 1977 to having setups across 12 African countries, we have been an integral part of Africa’s growth story.”
The ISO 9001/2015 certified vehicle assembly plant, in Rosslyn, is capable of assembling vehicles from 8 to 49 tonnes payload, and across various wheelbase length that ranges from 3800mm to 5200mm. Currently employing around 70 people, the facility has started exporting to Mozambique and Zimbabwe and is looking to expand its operations by exporting to other neighbouring countries in the region.
Tata Africa Holdings, the main promoter company of the Tata group in Africa set up in 1994, has a strong presence in over 13 African countries with investments exceeding US$145 million (Rs 942 crores). Over three decades, it has entered into joint ventures and partnerships with several African companies to help develop local resources and talent.
