The Mahindra Group-owned SsangYong today unveiled the production version of its Tivoli compact SUV.
The Tivoli is 4.2 metres long and sits on an all-new platform – the first developed since SsangYong was taken over by Mahindra & Mahindra. The front suspension is MacPherson struts, while the rear gets a torsion beam configuration. The Tivoli is a five-seater and its boot capacity is 423 litres.
The Tivoli will be launched at the start of June with a 126bhp, 1.6-litre normally-aspirated petrol engine, and a 1.6 diesel will follow a couple of months later. The petrol motor produces 124bhp and 116lb ft at 4600rpm. It will come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, but a six-speed automatic gearbox from Aisin. Four-wheel drive will be offered on all editions, too.
The Tivoli, which has a kerb weight of 1,300kg, has a length of 4195mm, width of 1795mm, height of 1590mm and a wheelbase of 2600mm.
As with many of the new breed of small SUVs, the Tivoli, which was developed over a period of four years, looks set to be offered with a wide range of customisation options, including a 7-inch colour screen on high-end editions, a contrast roof colour and, potentially, some bold interior trim finishes.
Speaking at the Korean launch of the car, Anand Mahindra, chairman, Mahindra Group, said, “The Tivoli marks a significant new milestone in the growing partnership between Mahindra and SsangYong. This new SUV epitomizes the spirit of ‘Korea Can Do’ and reflects SsangYong’s rich legacy of innovation in product development. We are confident that the Tivoli is poised to drive SsangYong’s growth in the future”.
Dr Pawan Goenka, executive director, M&M, commented, “The launch of the Tivoli marks a significant milestone as this is the first all-new product after SsangYong’s association with Mahindra. I am sure that with the launch of the Tivoli, SsangYong will straddle the entire product spectrum in the SUV segment with diverse offerings at distinctive price points and value.”
Dr Goenka added: 'Nothing can change fortunes of an automotive company faster than the launch of a successful product, and I believe the Tivoli has that potential. We believe it will set several new benchmarks in the B-segment SUV category.'
