Shanghai GM recently sold its four millionth Chevrolet vehicle. The GM-SAIC joint venture began offering products from GM’s largest global brand in 2005.
Chevrolet reached a million cumulative sales within five years. It hit two million sales in 2012 and three million sales in 2013. Last year, Shanghai GM sold a record 717,007 Chevrolets in China. China remained the brand’s second-largest market after the United States.
Starting with two models, Shanghai GM has expanded its Chevrolet portfolio to 12 model lines featuring 53 variants. Its lineup includes the Sail family car, Cruze mid-range passenger car, Malibu upper-medium sedan, Captiva SUV, Trax urban SUV and Camaro sports car. According to the company, the products have become especially popular among younger car buyers.
Chevrolet has a presence in 280 cities and regions across China, with sales outlets in all Tier 3 cities and more than half of Tier 4 cities.
General Motors has 11 joint ventures, two wholly owned foreign enterprises and more than 58,000 employees in China. GM and its joint ventures have the broadest line-up of vehicles and brands among automakers in China and passenger cars and commercial vehicles are sold under the Baojun, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Jiefang, and Wuling brands. In 2014, GM sold more than 3.5 million vehicles in China.
