The Baojun 730 from SAIC-GM-Wuling has become the first multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) priced below RMB 100,000 (Rs 10.18 lakh) to get the top five-star safety rating from the China New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP).
The Baojun 730 received a score of 54.4 points in crash tests carried out by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) and announced on June 29 in Tianjin. It achieved the maximum score of 18 points in side impact tests.

The seven-seat MPV is based on a new front-engine, front-wheel-drive platform developed by SAIC-GM-Wuling. More than 60 percent of its body structure is made of high-strength steel. The application of thermoforming technology on the B-pillars and door panels further strengthen occupant protection. The Baojun 730 has a buffer zone in the engine compartment, which helps protect the driver and passengers in the event of a frontal collision.
Additional active and passive safety features include Bosch's Electronic Stability Program (ESP) that integrates six functions, Continental tyres with enhanced ground grip, ISOFIX attachment points for child safety seats, front and side air bags, seat belts with pre-tensioners, seat belt reminder, cruise control, reverse radar and reverse camera.
The Baojun 730, which was developed based on feedback of SAIC-GM-Wuling customers to address the needs of growing Chinese families, has sold over 250,000 units since the model’s launch in July 2014.
