SAIC GM has begun shipping its latest Chevrolet Sail sedan. On July 17, a ship containing 756 Chevrolet Sail 3 family sedans left Yantai Port in China’s Shandong province for Chile and Peru. It marked the beginning of exports of the third-generation Sail.
Its predecessor, the second-generation Sail, was China’s most popular export model. More than 230,000 were shipped to markets around the globe. SAIC GM plans to export the Sail 3 to additional markets in South America, Africa and Asia.
The Sail 3, built on SAIC GM’s new-generation small car architecture, was introduced in China in December 2014. It is bigger, roomier, more stylish and more fuel efficient than its predecessor.
According to GM, the car was designed, developed and manufactured leveraging GM’s global processes and complies with G0 global vehicle durability test standards for road conditions around the world. The carmaker says about 48,000km of architecture tests, 2.8 million kilometres of simulated road tests, 350,000km of powertrain tests and 640,000km of emission tests were carried out for the car.
