Kia has announced that it is to have the global launch of the EV6 GT, the high-performance version of the all-electric EV6 and also built on the EV-dedicated E-GMP platform, on October 4, 2022. The EV6 GT is the first of GT-specific all-electric cars to come from Kia in the future.
The EV6 GT, operated as a single trim with all-wheel drive, adds a rear-wheel motor with a maximum output of 270 kW and maximum torque of 390 Nm and a front-wheel motor with a maximum output of 160 kW and a maximum torque of 350 Nm.
The Hyundai Motor Group’s very advanced E-GMP platform also means the GT weighs a segment svelte 2165kg and its performance is undeniably at the sharp end, with 576bhp and a 3.5sec 100kph time. Top speed is 260kph. A 400V/800V multi-charging system enables the EV GT to charge from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes, using the 800V ultra-fast charging system.
With the launch of the EV6 GT, Kia says it “expects to open the era of full-fledged high-performance electric vehicles by providing a dynamic driving experience that has never been experienced before to customers who pursue driving fun.”
Various specifications have been applied to the EV6 GT so that customers can experience powerful power performance safely and comfortably. These include front monoblock 4-piston calipers, which have improved size and performance compared to the base model, provide excellent braking performance. Plus, agile handling performance by strengthening the body such as 'front strut ring' and 'rear luggage floor reinforcement bar' so that the driver can easily control the vehicle even at high speed.
In addition, the steering response according to speed is optimised through rack-driven power steering (R-MDPS) and variable gear ratio (VGR) technology, and adjustment and driving stability are additionally secured by applying Michelin's GT-specific performance tyres.
In addition, the Electronic Differential Limiter (e-LSD) actively controls the driving force of the left and right wheels to enable stable and fast driving on curved sections, and the Electronic Control Suspension (ECS) adjusts the damper damping force according to the driving mode to adjust the damping force of the vehicle. It optimizes posture control to achieve a balanced ride and handling performance.
GT and drift modes
The EV6 GT has a 'GT Mode' which automatically optimises the motor, brake, steering, damper and e-LSD. In particular, in GT mode, the RBM (Regenerative Braking Maximization) function that maximizes the use of regenerative braking has been applied for the first time in the Hyundai Motor Group.
This function maximizes the amount of regenerative braking during deceleration in dynamic driving as well as daily driving to secure additional mileage compared to competing cars and reduce the use of general brakes. It also improves braking performance by optimising the regenerative braking control of the front and rear wheels.
Furthermore, a 'drift mode' is also applied for the first time in a Kia car. By distributing the maximum driving force to the rear wheel motor when turning, it induces 'oversteer', a phenomenon in which the vehicle travels inward than the actual steering target, enabling drift driving that adds to the enjoyment of driving. In addition, when escaping from a turn, the driving force is distributed to the front wheels so that it can get out of the curve faster than when the driving force is distributed only to the rear wheels.
