Daimler breaks ground on EV battery ‘gigafactory’

Lays foundation for one of the biggest and most modern battery factories in the world; €500 million plant will challenge Tesla's Gigafactory and produce lithium ion batteries for Mercedes-Benz's EQ sub-brand.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel yesterday broke ground on a new 500 million euro (Rs 3,822 crore) factory in Germany that is planned to assemble lithium ion battery packs for Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming line-up of EQ-branded electric cars as well as its Smart Electric Drive models, new electric commercial vehicles and future hybrid models.
