Scooterisation is taking India by storm. Latest FY2018 domestic sales numbers released by SIAM a few days ago show that the segment sold a total of 6,719,911 units and notched 19.90 percent year-on-year growth. That number also works out to 18,410 scooters sold for each day of FY2018.
India, at present, has eight scooter manufacturers who retail more than 25 scooters. Scooters are mostly preferred for their practical aspects and ease of operation, and demand is also growing in rural India for these vehicles, both among traditional motorcycle buyers and increasingly women. Urban India has been smitten by the scooter phenomenon many years ago. What's more, a number of first-time two-wheeler buyers are looking at scooters at their preferred mode of transport.
Also, with petrol prices hitting record highs (Rs 81.77 a litre in Mumbai on April 13) for the past fortnight, consumers on two wheels and more are looking to s-t-r-e-t-c-h their money to the maximum.
Here is the list of the Top 10 fuel-efficient scooters (as per the mileage declared by OEMs to apex industry body SIAM).
10. Honda Aviator – 51.3kpl
Powered by a 110cc engine that develops 8hp, the Aviator comes with a 6-litre fuel tank and delivers 51.3 kilometres to the petrol litre. The scooter retails in Mumbai for an on-road price of Rs 62,500. The disc variant sells for Rs 64,800 (on-road Mumbai)
9. Suzuki Let’s – 51.3kpl
This 110cc scooter from Suzuki’s stable weighs 98kg and delivers up to 8.6hp of power. Its on-road price in Mumbai is Rs 58,100-59,500 (disc). Fuel economy wise, the Let's gives the same mileage as the Honda Aviator.
8. Hero Maestro Edge – 51.5kpl
The most fuel-efficient scooter from Hero MotoCorp runs on a 110cc engine that delivers 8.2hp of power and weighs 110kg. The on-road price in Mumbai is Rs 66,800-67,900.
7. Honda Activa 4G – 52.5kpl
This hugely popular scooter from Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India is powered by an 8hp, 110cc engine and weighs 108kg. Its on-road price in Mumbai is Rs 61,000.
6. TVS Scooty Zest – 52.6kpl
With an 8hp 110cc engine, the TVS Scooty Zest weighs 97kg, almost as much as the most fuel-efficient scooter in this list. It has an on-road price in Mumbai of Rs 58,900-60,600 (Himalayan series).
5. TVS Jupiter – 54.4kpl
The TVS Wego shares the same engine as its Jupiter sibling, but is tuned for a higher torque of 8.4 Nm and weighs a little less than the Jupiter. Its on-road price in Mumbai starts from Rs 62,800 to Rs 67,900 (disc).
3. Honda Activa i – 55.6kpl
A scooter that is primarily targeted at women riders, this Activa gets a fibre body and hence weighs 5kg lighter than the Activa 4G. Powered by the same engine from the 4G sibling, this one retails at Rs 57,100 (on-road Mumbai).
2. Suzuki Access 125 – 56.7kpl
The most fuel efficient scooter from Suzuki claims these mileage figures on the basis of its SEP (Suzuki Eco Performance) technology. It has an 8.7hp, 125cc engine and has a kerb weight of 102kg. The Access' on-road price in Mumbai starts from Rs 67,000.
Notably, it is the only 125cc scooter to be part of this most fuel-efficient scooters club.
Honourable mentions
Yamaha’s Cygnus Ray series of scooters and the Fascino claim to deliver mileage figures of 50kpl. Hero Maestro’s sibling Duet delivers 49.5kpl and Activa’s sibling Dio delivers 50.5kpl. The most frugal scooter from Mahindra is the Gusto (110cc) that delivers 48.5kpl.
1.TVS Scooty Pep Plus – 57.5kpl
The most fuel efficient scooter in India is this petite 80cc offering from TVS Motor Co. At 95kg, it is also the lightest scooter in India which is one of the reasons for giving the best mileage. The TVS Scooty Pep Plus is priced at Rs 48,100 (on-road Mumbai).
