Bharat Stage VI emission norms, which ushered in a new era of clean engine emission technologies in India from April 1, 2020, are having their impact in the development of greener, more eco-friendly engines in the commercial vehicle (CV) industry. CV market leader Tata Motors, which has been at the forefront of changing conventions through differentially valued products designed to consistently increase customer profitability, is now making a big difference – through its 5-litre Turbotronn engine, which bears the tagline ‘Har Boond Mein Bachat’.
The sharp rise in fuel prices, particularly of diesel, has been a major cause of worry for CV transporters as it directly affects their profitability. With higher vehicle prices in BS VI, flatter freight rates and increasing operating costs, the most appropriate solution a commercial vehicle OEM can provide to the road transport industry is a product range that reduces the operating cost substantially. The bottom-line improvement stemming from this would ultimately make the transportation sector economically viable and bring down the overall logistics costs in the country.
Stretching every drop and litre to the max
That’s just what Tata Motors has achieved in the BS VI regime and the expansion of its multi-axle truck and tractor-trailer portfolio with its indigenously developed 5-litre Turbotronn engine. The Tata 5L Turbotronn, which develops maximum power of 180 hp and humungous 700 Nm of torque, has proven to be extremely successful in the ICV and MCV product segments with trucks like the Ultra 1518, Ultra T.16 and Ultra 1918. This is thanks to the state-of-the art engineering design, high power density (HP/L) and flatter torque curve that help yield the highest fluid economy in their respective segments.
Even more power, more torque now
Now Tata Motors has extended this engine with enhanced power and torque – 200 hp / 850 Nm – for the multi-axle and tractor-trailer segments to enable customers derive the benefits of higher savings in fluid (diesel and DEF) cost and service cost, higher operating reliability, superior drivability, excellent NVH characteristics and robust road performance across varying terrains and applications.
Historically, multi-axle trucks and tractor-trailers in India have always been powered by heavy-duty high displacement volume, 6-cylinder engines that deliver decent fuel efficiency and perceptive comfort to customers on robustness and longer life.
Now modern engineering in the form of new-generation engines like the Tata 5L Turbotronn generate higher power and torque from smaller capacity with a considerable enhancement in fuel efficiency and even better engine life, operational sturdiness and durability. What’s more, service cost for these engines is also far lower due to advanced technologies used in design and manufacturing.
Optimal efficiencies across multiple applications
Tata Motors’ multi-axle and tractor-trailer range with 5L Turbotronn engine comprises products like the Signa 2821, LPT 2821 Cowl, Ultra 2821 in the 28-tonne GVW category, Signa 3521, LPT 3521 Cowl in the 35-tonne GVW category and Ultra 3021.S in the 30-tonne GCW category with different deck spans and fully built options.
Equipped with carefully chosen value features like 3-mode fuel economy switch, gearshift advisor, electronic anti-fuel theft, unitised wheel bearings and other features, these trucks are witnessing increasing demand from various sectors including tankers, industrial goods, cold chain and market logistics – mainly because of the significant difference in fuel economy and reduced operating costs.
