Toyota India sales hit record levels in FY2025: 309,000 units

Twenty-five years after it began manufacturing operations in India, Toyota has clocked its best-ever fiscal year sales and surpassed the 300,000 units milestone for the first time in the domestic market, riding on strong demand for its MPVs and SUVs as well as its quartet of rebadged models.

Toyota India sales hit record levels in FY2025: 309,000 units

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), which began manufacturing passenger vehicles in India in 1999, has registered its best-ever domestic market sales in FY2025. This stellar market performance confirms Autocar Professional’s forecast back in early December 2024 when TKM’s first eight months’ wholesales were 203,555 units.

TKM’s wholesales of an estimated 309,334 passenger vehicles in FY2025 constitute robust 26% year-on-year growth (FY2024: 245,676 units) for the Indian arm of Toyota Motor Corporation, and also mark the first time that it has surpassed the 300,000-unit sales milestone.

This strong market performance comes on the back of a similar show in CY2024, when Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 300,159 cars, SUVs and MPVs to drive past the 300,000-unit milestone for the first time in a calendar year.

What’s more, in CY2024, the increased sales coming for TKM through the tie-up with Suzuki Motor Co along with the surging demand for SUVs and MPVs saw India emerge as Toyota Motor Corp’s fourth largest global market, up from seventh in CY2023 and going past Canada, Indonesia and Thailand. In CY2024, India was not only the fastest-growing market for Toyota but also its largest outside the world’s top markets – China, the USA and its home market of Japan.

Other than September 2024, TKM has maintained strong double-digit growth throughout FY2025.

With sustained strong demand for most of its products including the four rebadged models (Glanza, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Rumion and Urban Cruiser Taisor), TKM has averaged monthly sales of 25,777 units in the past 12 months compared to 20,473 units in FY2024.

The Innova MPV twins – Crysta and Hycross – continue to be the biggest contributors to TKM sales. In the April 2024-February 2025 period, they accounted for 97,348 units or 35% of the company’s PV dispatches of 280,902 units in the first 11 months of FY2025. The Innova Hycross, whose hybrid system allows the MPV to operate in electric mode for about 60% of the time, ensuring better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, is the more popular model accounting for an estimated 55% of the Innova’s wholesales across India, including Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets.

TKM’s second best-selling model is the Urban Cruiser Hyryder (55,102 units) midsize SUV. In third position is the Glanza hatchback (45,338 units). In January 2025, the Glanza drove past the 200,000 sales milestone five-and-a-half years after the premium hatchback was introduced in India in June 2019.

The butch Fortuner SUV with over 29,393 units is ranked fourth, while the Urban Cruiser Taisor compact SUV (28,910 units) ranks fifth on the TKM model ladder-board for the first 11 months of FY2025. The Taisor is yet to complete a year in the market but nevertheless in 10 months it has acquired a good footing in the highly competitive compact SUV segment. The Rumion MPV (20,085 units) takes sixth position in the TKM portfolio. The company also retails the Hilux pickup, Vellfire luxury MPV and the Camry hybrid sedan.

A quick look at Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s past 10 years’ wholesales data (detailed above) reveals just how rapidly the company has grown, particularly since FY2023 when it clocked sales of 173,245 passenger vehicles (up 40% YoY). It followed this strong show with a similar 41% YoY increase in FY2024 to a best-ever 245,676 units.
