Toyota Glanza clocks 200,000 sales since launch

Toyota Kirloskar Motor, which registered wholesales of 26,178 units, up 13% YoY, in January 2025 has during the month seen the Glanza, its sole hatchback, drive past the cumulative sales milestone of 200,000 units in the Indian passenger vehicle market.

As per SIAM and industry wholesales numbers, the Toyota Glanza has clocked total dispatches of 201,777 units till end-January 2025. The milestone has been achieved in 66 months or five-and-a-half years after the premium hatchback was introduced in India.

The Glanza is intrinsically the rebadged Baleno, which Maruti Suzuki India manufactures at Suzuki Motor Corp’s plant in Gujarat for Toyota Kirloskar Motor. Launched on June 6, 2019, the Glanza has given Toyota a successful market entry into what essentially was a new segment for the Japanese carmaker in India.

The Glanza drove past the 100,000-unit mark in a little less than four years after launch, then surpassed 150,000 sales in January 2024 and has now clocked 200,000-plus sales in the domestic market.

From launch in June 2019 till end-January 2025, the Toyota Glanza has sold 201,777 units with FY2024 (52,262 units) being its best fiscal year.

As the consolidated sales table above depicts, after FY2020's 24,380 units, FY2021’s sales of 22,530 units and FY2022’s 22,097 units meant the Glanza was among the many cars in India impacted by the Covid pandemic. That trend changed in FY2023 with the launch of the new Glanza at the fag end of FY2022.

Demand rose by 80% YoY to 39,766 units in FY2023 and then by 31% in FY2024 which, with 52,262 units, has been the Glanza's best fiscal to date. In the first 10 months of FY2025, the Toyota hatchback has sold an estimated 40,742 units.

In terms of market rivals, other than the Baleno (139,324 units in April 2024-January 2025), the Glanza goes head-to-head with the Tata Altroz (31,925 units) and the Hyundai i20 (47,434 units).

The new Glanza is currently available in nine variants, with pricing starting at Rs 787,000 for the base E variant (on-road Delhi) through to the top-end V AMT, equipped with all the bells and whistles and priced at Rs 11.40 lakh.

The Glanza CNG variant, which delivers fuel efficiency of 30.61km/kg, has tapped the growing demand for CNG-powered passenger cars in India.

Eight months after the launch of the second-gen Glanza, in November 2022, TKM entered the CNG market with the Glanza CNG. The Toyota Glanza CNG variant, available in S and G trims with manual transmission, is priced at Rs 969,000 and Rs 10.82 lakh (on-road Delhi) respectively. The Glanza CNG, which is powered by the same 1.2-litre petrol engine in the standard Glanza and the Baleno, is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission powertrain. In petrol-only mode, the engine develops 90hp and 113Nm torque; in CNG mode, the power output drops to 77hp and 98.5Nm. Toyota claims that Glanza CNG delivers fuel efficiency of 30.61km/kg.

For its interiors, the Glanza gets a beige-and-black dual-tone cabin theme compared to the Baleno's blue-black treatment albeit has the same features like the 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, a head-up display and flat-bottom steering wheel. Safety equipment gets a bump up with six airbags and ESC.

With February and March 2025 sales yet to be chalked in, expect TKM to achieve the 300,000-units milestone for the first time in fiscal year in FY2025.

TOYOTA INDIA DRIVES TOWARDS RECORD SALES IN FY2025
Toyota Kirloskar Motor, which has sold a record 254,578 passenger vehicles in the first 10 months of the current fiscal, up 29% YoY (April 2023-January 2024: 197,318 units), has already surpassed its record wholesales of 245,676 units in FY2024.

With February and March 2025 numbers yet to be chalked in, expect TKM to drive past the 300,000-units milestone for the first time in fiscal year in FY2025. In CY2024, the company had sold a total of 300,159 vehicles, going past the 300,000 milestone for the first time in a calendar year.

With sustained demand for its popular set of MPVs led by the Innova Crysta and Hycross, SUVs as also Maruti-rebadged models like the Glanza, Urban Cruiser Hyryder midsize SUV, Urban Cruiser Taisor compact SUV and the Rumion MPV, ramped-up production and a number of customer-friendly initiatives, Toyota India has been on a roll.
