Suzuki Motorcycle India’s Access 125 is now India’s third largest selling scooter. The model, also the largest selling 125cc scooter in the domestic market, has registered sales of 43,354 units in April 2018, growing by an impressive 54.73 percent YoY.
The Suzuki Access 125, which has been a consistent performer for the company and has evolved into a reliable Honda Activa-rival over the last decade, is one of the most profitable and highest-selling two-wheeler model for the company globally.
While it continues to be the flagship scooter from Suzuki Motorcycle India, the company is now preparing to introduce yet another globally popular scooter model named Burgman Street 125 soon. The upcoming scooter too will be powered by the proven and refined four-stroke, single-cylinder, 124cc engine from the Access 125.
Suzuki Access 125 sales were revived when the company rolled out a thoroughly reworked model two years ago. The new Suzuki Access 125 turned out to be a completely redesigned model with cosmetic as well as mechanical changes. The powertrain came with Suzuki-patented SEP technology along with an all-new frame, optional disc brake, updates on the front of suspensions and wheels and other areas. The retail demand of the new Suzuki Access 125 has been growing consistently ever since.
Meanwhile, the Honda Activa and the TVS Jupiter score first and second positions in the top-selling scooters list with sales of 339,878 units (up 8.72 percent YoY) and 56,599 units (down 3.29 percent YoY) respectively.
Honda’s second largest selling scooter, the 110cc Dio, ranked fourth with sales of 41,282 units in April 2018, down 6.07 percent YoY. To ensure quick recovery in the market demand for the Honda Dio, the company has rolled out an updated 2018 edition of the model, adding several new features and a deluxe variant to the same. The model may see growing numbers in the coming months.
At the fifth spot is Hero MotoCorp’s Maestro brand, which has sold 34,694 units in April, down by 1.47 percent YoY.
On the other hand, Honda’s 125cc scooter, Grazia has bagged the sixth spot with sales of 25,949 units in April. The newly launched scooter is garnering substantial sales to the market leader, which has been aiming at further penetration of scooters across the several regional markets. The Grazia has undoubtedly consolidated Honda’s presence in the surging 125cc scooter category. Autocar Professional estimates that the Honda Grazia has become the second largest selling 125cc scooter in the domestic market.
Hero’s Duet ranks seventh with sales of 18,153 units, up 22.51 percent YoY, albeit on a low base. Notably, the Maestro and the Duet umbrellas will soon see the addition of new 125cc scooters. Hero MotoCorp aims to tap the growing demand for the premium 125cc scooter class.
At number is eight is yet another scooter from the stable of Hero MotoCorp. Its 102cc Pleasure model, which is positioned for the female urban commuters, sold 17,225 units in April, up an impressive 25.58 percent YoY.
Yamaha’s Fascino and Ray scooters have ranked ninth and tenth with sales of 15,164 units (down 29.40 percent YoY) and 12,784 units (down 17.21 percent YoY) respectively. Both the scooter models have registered a YoY decline, an urgent reason that the company must pay attention to.
According to sales data from apex industry body SIAM data, the overall scooter market saw sales of a total of 661,007 units in April, thereby growing at 12.63 percent YoY, whereas, the motorcycle segment has recorded YoY growth of 19.38 percent for the last month.
