The Maruti Grand Vitara, launched on September 26, 2022, has driven past the 300,000 cumulative sales milestone in the domestic market in the first week of April 2025. The premium midsize SUV has taken 31 months to achieve the milestone, beating the previous best of 37 months by the Hyundai Creta, which continues to be India’s best-selling midsize SUV with 194,871 units sold in FY2025.
As per wholesales SIAM wholesales data, the Maruti Grand Vitara has clocked total sales of 296,430 units from September 2022 through to end-March 2025. This is just 3,570 units shy of the 300,000-units marks which the popular midsize SUV would have surpassed earlier this month.
As the data reveals, the Grand Vitara sold 51,315 units in the last seven months of FY2023, 121,169 units in FY2024 and 123,946 units, up 2% YoY, in FY2025. However, compared to FY2024, sales slowed down in FY2025 and the Grand Vitara witnessed marginal 2% YoY increase and just 2,777 units more year on year.
Nevertheless, the Grand Vitara is the fastest in its segment to hit the 300,000-units. It was the fastest midsize SUV to achieve the 250,000 milestone, in line with its 200,000 sales which it achieved in 22 months, bettering the Hyundai Creta which took 25 months to achieve the same milestone. This popular Maruti model was also the fastest in the midsize SUV segment to the 100,000-units mark, taking just 12 months from market entry.
With this, the Grand Vitara becomes the second SUV retailed from Maruti Suzuki’s premium Nexa sales channel to achieve this milestone. The Baleno-based Fronx compact SUV was the first Nexa SUV to hit 300,000 sales and in less than two years after launch. With 166,216 units, 23% YoY growth and a lead of 42,370 units over the Grand Vitara in FY2025, the Fronx maintains its position as the best-selling Nexa SUV for the second straight year.
A STRONG DRAW ON MULTIPLE FRONTS
A premium product, outside and in, the Grand Vitara entered the midsize SUV market at an opportune time, just when the segment was beginning to boom, and has surfed the wave of demand coming its way. The 12-variant-strong model’s on-road pricing (Mumbai) starts at Rs 12.99 lakh for the base Sigma variant and goes upwards to Rs 23.68 lakh for the top-end Alpha+ variant.
The highlight of the Grand Vitara is the two engine options it shares with the Toyota Hyryder. The proven 103hp, 1.5-litre K15C petrol mild-hybrid engine, which also powers many Maruti Suzuki models (Brezza, Ertiga, XL6), comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
There’s also the Toyota-sourced 92hp, 1.5-litre, three-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine paired to an electric motor that develops 79hp and 141Nm of torque. Combined, the hybrid powertrain produces 116hp and is paired to an e-CVT gearbox. Maruti claims an efficiency of 27.97kpl for this powertrain.
CNG VARIANT ADDS HEFT
In January 2023, four months after the model’s launch, in a move designed to expand its addressable target market, Maruti Suzuki, which is also India’s CNG market leader, introduced a CNG variant to the Grand Vitara.
Currently priced at Rs 15.22 lakh, on-road Mumbai (Delta CNG) and Rs 17.28 lakh (Zeta CNG), the CNG variant is powered by the proven K-series 1.5-litre, petrol engine which develops peak power of 88hp at 5500rpm and max torque of 121.5 Nm at 4200rpm in CNG mode. Offered with a five-speed manual gearbox, the Grand Vitara S-CNG delivers a claimed fuel efficiency of 26.6 km/kg. To put things into perspective, the Baleno CNG delivers 30.61km/kg. The only other competition the Grand Vitara CNG has is its cousin, the Toyota Hyryder CNG, both of which are built at TKM’s Bidadi plant.
The interiors of the GV and the Hyryder are also similar, the sole difference being the colour schemes. Both get the same steering wheel design that’s also seen on other newer Maruti Suzuki models. The touchscreen infotainment, instrument cluster and all the switchgear are identical on both SUVs as well.
In terms of features, top-spec variants of the Grand Vitara get a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, wireless charger, ambient lighting, connected car tech, ESP, hill-hold assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, and six airbags.
GRAND VITARA: KEY CONTRIBUTOR TO NEXA SUV SALES
The Grand Vitara continues to be a key contributor to the carmaker’s Nexa brand sales. If one compares its contribution to all Nexa models since its entry in FY2023, then only the Baleno hatchback (565,699 units from FY2023 to FY2025) and the Fronx compact SUV (300,951 units) are ahead of the Grand Vitara (296,430 units).
Nexa, Maruti Suzuki India’s premium sales channel, which was launched on July 23, 2015, has till end-FY2025 sold a total of 3.12 million passenger vehicles, contributing 20% to Maruti Suzuki’s total passenger vehicle wholesales of 15 million units in the domestic market.
The Grand Vitara is currently the fourth highest contributor to Nexa sales. The 296,430 units sold till end-FY2025 give it a 9.47% share of Nexa sales. In FY2025, it was the second best-selling Nexa SUV after the Fronx and accounted for 36% of total Nexa SUV sales of 340,049 units and 17% of Maruti Suzuki's record UV dispatches of 720,186 units.
Meanwhile, in an effort to rev up demand in the new fiscal and beyond, in early April 2025, Maruti Suzuki has updated the Grand Vitara with a new strong hybrid variant, more features across the board, six airbags as standard and an automatic transmission option for the AWD variants. The model range now stands expanded to 18 variants, with pricing starting at Rs 11.42 lakh for the Sigma petrol with manual transmission (ex-showroom).
