Maharashtra registers retail sales of 2,602 EVs and 10,900 vehicles on Gudi Padwa

As per state-wise new vehicle registration data on the Vahan portal, Maharashtra clocked retail sales of 10,897 vehicles including 2,602 electric vehicles on March 30, which marked Gudi Padwa and the new year for the state which accounts for an 11% share of all-India sales in FY2025 and is the No. 1 in electric two-wheelers and passenger vehicles

Maharashtra registers retail sales of 2,602 EVs and 10,900 vehicles on Gudi Padwa

Gudi Padwa, one of the most significant festivals of Maharashtra and the day that heralds the arrival of spring as well as the Marathi new year for the state, traditionally sees new purchases being made which includes vehicles as well as real estate, among other acquisitions. Gudi Padwa 2025, which was celebrated on March 30, stayed true to that on the new automobile registrations front, as detailed in the retail sales statistics on the Vahan portal.

As per the latest Vahan data (March 31, 9am), a total of 66,650 vehicles across all powertrains were sold on Sunday, March 30, 2025 across India. Of this, Maharashtra accounted for 10,897 units or a 16% share of all-India vehicle sales yesterday.

Of these 10,897 new vehicles sold on Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, 2,602 were electric vehicles and had a 24% share of all auto retails sold on March 30. These 2,602 EVs comprised 2,420 electric two-wheelers, 137 electric passenger vehicles, 32 electric three-wheelers and 13 electric commercial vehicles.

Maharashtra the No. 1 state in electric 2W and passenger vehicle retails
Maharashtra remains a powerhouse of automobile retails for India Auto Inc. Of the total 26 million (2,61,00,151) vehicles sold across the country in the past 11 months and 30 days, Maharashtra accounts for an 11% share with 29,35,017 vehicles, behind Uttar Pradesh (37,61,470 units) but ahead of Tamil Nadu (19,36,901 units), Gujarat (18,86,901 units) and Karnataka (18,37,071 units).

On the EV front, Maharashtra leads in two-wheeler and passenger vehicle retails. As of end of day on March 29, 2025, the state had registered total EV retail sales of 238,857 units in the April 1, 2024 to March 29, 2025 period, and total auto retails (across all powertrains) of 2.92 million units (29,24,120) from the all-India total of 26 million auto retails. One day later, as per the latest Vahan data (March 31, 9am), Maharashtra has total EV retails of 241,459 units, which translates into an additional 2,602 EVs sold on March 30. The same day saw Maharashtra’s total auto retail sales total rise to 29,35,017 units – which is an additional 10,897 vehicles including EVs.

Of the total 11,36,015 electric two-wheelers sold in FY2025 to date, with March 31 stats still to roll in, Maharashtra with 2,07,381 units has an 18% share and is the only state to achieve 200,000 e2W sales in a fiscal. It is ahead of Karnataka (146,328 e2Ws), Tamil Nadu (118,836 e2Ws) and Uttar Pradesh (100,792 units), which are the only ones to cross the 100,000 e2W retails sales milestone in FY2025.

Maharashtra also enjoys No. 1 status in electric passenger vehicle retails. With 16,926 electric cars, SUVs and MPVs sold from April 1-2024 till March 30, 2025, is has a 16% share of the e-PV market and is ahead of Karnataka (14,425 e-PVs) and Kerala (11,721 e-PVs), the two other states which have clocked over 10,000 sales in the current fiscal.
