The Jupiter, TVS Motor Co’s flagship scooter, available in 110cc and 125cc variants, has notched a new milestone in the India market: 5,000,000 or five million units. As per Autocar Professional’s data analytics, the five-million sales milestone came up in June 2022.
This means the Jupiter, which was launched on September 16, 2013 as a 110cc model, has taken 106 months or a little less than nine years (108 months) to ride past the landmark. From launch through till end-August 2022, the Jupiter has gone home to 5,180,748 buyers across India. Its best 12-month sales came in FY2018 when it sold 810,916 units.
A glimpse of the Jupiter’s . On May 14, 2015, less than two years after launch, the scooter crossed the 500,000-unit sales mark, providing a glimpse into its potential. Thirty months since launch, on June 13, 2016, the Jupiter crossed the million sales mark. On September 26, 2017, the Jupiter crossed the 2-million sales mark.
Having seen its first 125cc scooter, the NTorq make strong market gains right from launch in February 2018 and sell over 200,000 units in FY2019, TVS Motor Co introduced the Jupiter 125cc in October 2021. The feature-laden, bigger and more powerful Jupiter 125cc with industry-first features such as the largest under-seat storage, segment-leading longest seat, neo-masculine styling and high mileage has proved to be a growth driver for the brand, alongside the original 110cc model.
Jupiter powers TVS scooter market share
Importantly, since its launch nine years ago, the Jupiter has helped give TVS a strong position in India’s scooter market. Within a year of launch TVS’ scooter market share grew from 12.68% to 15.19% in FY2015 and 16.36% in FY2018, which is when the TVS NTorq was introduced in the penultimate month of that fiscal. Since then, the Jupiter-NTorq combine has accelerated TVS’ scooter market share to 24%, next only to market leader Honda which has 48 percent.
Proof of Jupiter powering TVS’s scooter can be amply seen in the company’s sales numbers over nine years and five months of FY2023. Of the company’s cumulative sales of 79,54,438 scooters since FY2014 till end-August 2022, the Jupiter accounts for 51,80,748 units which constitutes an overwhelming 65% percent.
Maintaining the tempo in FY2023
A close look at the SIAM wholesales numbers for nine scooter OEMs in the first five months of FY2023 reveals that of the top four OEMs with six-figure sales, TVS has registered strong 89% YoY growth, followed by market leader Honda with 53% YoY and Suzuki with 13%. And, seen from the market share perspective, TVS has also made the maximum gains: a nearly 4.5 percentage point increase to 23.88% from 19.40% a year ago.
TVS’s 523,458 scooters in April-August 2022 is also its best-ever total recorded for the first five months of a fiscal over a decade (see data table below). The company had recorded half-a-million-unit sales before, in April-August 2018 and had a scooter market share of 16.45%.
The importance of scooters to TVS Motor Co's overall market standing can be gleaned from the fact that of the total 10,06,372 two-wheelers, including motorcycles, the company has sold in the first five months of FY2023, scooters account for 52%, followed by motorcycles (302,907 units / 30% share) and mopeds (180,007 units / 17.88 % share).
TVS’ flagship Jupiter remains its growth driver with 315,590 units out of 523,458 TVS scooters sold in April-August 2022, maintaining its numero uno status with a 60% percent share. In celebration of the five-million sales milestone, on September 23, TVS launched the 110cc Jupiter Classic in the top-of-the-line spec with disc brakes, priced at Rs 85,866 (ex-showroom, Delhi).
