Of the total 59,930 electric three-wheelers retailed in January 2025, the passenger carrier category accounted for 12,858 units, which marked a handsome 85% year-on-year increase in sales (January 2024: 6,940 units) and constituted a 21% share of total industry sales.
Delving into OEM-specific, Vahan-derived sales data for last month reveals a close fight for supremacy between market leader Mahindra Electric Mobility (MLMM) and Bajaj Auto. In fact, the two OEMs were separated by just 125 units – MLMM with 4,997 units and Bajaj Auto with 4,872 units (see Top 10 table below).
Mahindra Last Mile Mobility sold a total of 4,997 Treos (passenger) in January 2025, which gives it a market share of 39% for the month. MLMM has six electric three-wheelers in its portfolio comprising one passenger e3W (Treo), two goods carriers (Treo and Zor Grand), two e-rickshaws (e-Alfa Mini and Treo Yaari), one e-cart (e-Alfa Cargo).
The Mahindra Treo passenger model is powered by a 7.37 kWh battery which develops maximum power of 8 kW and 42 Nm torque. A full charge takes three hours and 50 minutes. While the Treo has an ARAI-certified range of 141km per charge, the company brochure says it has a real-world range of around 110km on a single charge. The Treo’s USP is the low running cost of just 50 paise per kilometre. MLMM offers a warranty of 5 years and 100,000km on the Treo.
Bajaj Auto sold a total of 4,872 RE E-Tec 9.0 passenger e3Ws, which gives it a 38% market share for January 2025. The RE E-Tec 9.0 is powered by an 8.9 kWh lithium-ion LFP battery, which offers a claimed range of 178km on a single charge and 45kph top speed. This Bajaj EV, which is equipped with a two-speed auto transmission, develops maximum power of 4.5 kW and 36 Nm of torque. A full charge takes four hours and 30 minutes. Bajaj Auto offers a warranty of five years or 120,000km on the RE E-Tec 9.0.
Piaggio Vehicles comes in at No. 3 in the January rankings with 1,427 units and an 11% market share. Mated to a powerful electric motor, the Piaggio Apé E-City LX Max (swappable) three-wheeler electric auto develops peak power of 5.4 kW and peak torque of 29 Nm. Certified range per swap is 68 kilometres.
Murugappa Group company TI Mobility, which had launched its Montra Super Auto exactly a year ago in January 2024, has swiftly moved up the ranks to be at No. 4 with sale of 558 units in January. The Montra Super Auto, which is equipped with a 10kW lithium-ion battery, has an ARAI-certified range of 203 kilometres and an on-range of 155 +/- 5km for full charge. The Montra Super Auto, has a top speed of 55kph, does 0-20kph in 4 seconds, and has a seating capacity of four including the driver. It develops peak power of 10kW and torque of 60 Nm. The Super Auto is available in two variants – the ePV and ePV 2.0 – and with a 3-year / 100,000km warranty with an additional extended warranty option of two years/50km.
