INDIA SALES: Top 5 Utility Vehicles in August 2016
Vitara Brezza tops the chart for second month running.
As expected, August proved to be another bumper month for UV sales in the country. Leading the growth for overall passenger vehicles, the segment notched up over 47% growth in sales, largely driven by the new models from the stables of Maruti, Hyundai and Toyota.
Total UV sales in August 2016 were 65,745 units and went some way in helping the overall passenger vehicle market clock 16.68 percent year-on-year growth – 258,722 units comprising cars, UVs and vans.
Maruti’s sub-four-metre compact SUV Vitara Brezza (9,554 units) became the most sold UV in the country for the second consecutive month, as it outsold rivals like the Hyundai Creta and the Ford EcoSport. Maruti’s efforts to ramp up production of the SUV to meet pent-up demand seem to be working now and the same is reflected in the despatches of the Brezza.
The much-in-demand compact SUV has been acting as a buffer to slowing sales of the Alto, Wagon-R and Swift hatchbacks. The model currently commands a waiting period of around 6 months, which is likely to come down in the near future.

Hyundai’s Creta managed to secure the second spot on the list for the third consecutive month as it edged past the Innova Crysta yet again with despatches of 8,450 units. The Creta has been a large sales driver for Hyundai for over a year now and with a spruced-up anniversary edition launched recently, it continues to draw buyers to the Korean carmaker’s showrooms.

Toyota’s new-generation Innova called the Crysta, took the third spot with sales of 8,229 units. The Innova always had a staunch following among private and fleet owners alike and the latest iteration of the MPV is no different as well. Though, with the diesel ban now lifted and a new petrol variant also on offer, Toyota would be aiming for the top spot with the Crysta in the coming months.

Thanks to the strong marketing initiatives and price corrections by Ford India, the EcoSport has seen a fresh demand wave in the domestic market, riding which it maintained its position in the Top 5 in August. The carmaker despatched a total of 5,248 units last month, thus securing the penultimate spot.

The Ertiga, which recently crossed the 275,000 sales mark in India, is the second MPV to be featured in Top 5 for August. The carmaker sold just over 5,000 units of the MPV during the month and with no real competition in the segment, its sales are likely to remain strong in the coming months as well.
