October 2016 saw popular models such as the Honda Activa and Dio, TVS Jupiter and Scooty Pep+, Suzuki Access, Hero Duet, and Yamaha Ray and Fascino solidify their positions in the market.
On the other hand, well-performing scooter models such as the Hero Maestro and Pleasure, Honda Aviator, TVS Scooty Zest and others lost on account of declining sales.
It’s no surprise that Honda’s hugely popular Activa scooter brand remained at the top with total sales of 250,681 units in October 2016. Activa sales grew by 5.52 percent YoY, thanks to its large base of sales (October 2015: 237,563).
The TVS Jupiter remains the second most selling scooter in India with total sales of 63,014 units in October, up 2.72 percent (October 2015: 61,345). The TVS Jupiter is also the only other scooter model, besides the Honda Activa, which appears in the overall top 10 best-selling two-wheelers’ list including motorcycles.
The Hero Maestro continues to occupy the third rank in the top 10 best-selling scooters list. The model sold 45,018 units in October, down by 31.57 percent YoY.
The Honda Dio ranked fourth with sales of 34,872 units, up by 45.11 percent YoY. It is to be noted here that although the Dio always remained a good performer for Honda, rising to the fourth spot it has been consistently outselling several other popular scooter models in the recent months.
At fifth spot is the popular 125cc Suzuki Access, which has reported sales of 25,871 units in October, up by 57.40 percent YoY. The model has almost doubled its sales after the company rolled out an all-new variant in March 2016.
At sixth spot is Yamaha’s Ray scooter models, which garnered total sales of 24,628 units last month. According to the company, the newly launched variant of the 113cc Ray Z model, Ray-ZR, has seen an impressive response from the market.

Hero MotoCorp’s 110cc family scooter, Duet has sold 24,581 units in October, and it ranks seventh in the top list. The Hero Duet has grown by a whopping 92.60 percent YoY, which only highlights its steady acceptance in the domestic scooter market.
With sales of 20,040 units in October, Yamaha’s Fascino model is No. 8 in the Top 10 list. This model’s sales have remained flat over its last year’s performance with YoY growth of 0.31 percent. Yamaha had sold 19,979 units of Fascino in October last year.

Despite declining by 24.34 percent YoY, the Hero Pleasure continues to feature in the Top 10 scooters’ list. The model remained as the ninth best-selling scooter in India with sales of 19,191 units in October 2016 (October 2015: 25,364).
Rounding of the list is TVS Motor’s Scooty Pep+ with sales of 13,120 units in October 2016, up by 53.85 percent YoY.
The scooter segment, which has notched overall year-on-year growth of 23.67% in the April-October 2016 period, is likely to come under pressure following the impact of the recent demonetisation move by the government. Demand for scooters, particularly from women in rural markets in the country, could see a slowdown following the demonetisation move by the government.
