While Honda’s Activa sales continue to soar, now making it the best-selling two-wheeler in India for six consecutive months, its YoY growth for June 2016 stood at 15.12 percent.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) sold 226,686 units of the most popular scooter model last month. It had sold 196,913 units of the same in June 2015.
TVS Jupiter stood as the second best-selling scooter model in the domestic market with sales of 46,145 units in June 2016. The model had fetched sales of 36,650 units to the company in June last year, which highlights the steady growth of this Honda Activa rival.
Interestingly, Honda’s Dio ranked as the third most popular scooter for June 2016 replacing the conventional third best-seller - Hero’s Maestro. The model raked in sales of 26,428 units last month. Dio, commonly preferred by the young and college-going students, jumped by more than twice in its YoY sales. Honda had sold 12,727 units of this model in June last year.
Hero Maestro ranked as the fourth best-selling scooter model for June 2016 sales. The model sold a total of 24,281 units last month. The Maestro brand is silently undergoing a transition of shifting customers from the earlier Honda Activa-derived Maestro model, which was launched in 2012, to the new model – Maestro Edge – that was launched last year. The old Maestro scooter is one of the models for which Hero MotoCorp pays a royalty to Honda.
Industry experts had always pointed out that the entry of Maestro Edge in the market is a well-thought strategy to replace the old scooter (Maestro) without losing its existing and new customer base, thereby also cutting down the financial liability to Honda. The Maestro Edge, along with Duet, was developed in-house by the engineers at Hero MotoCorp.
Hero MotoCorp’s metal-bodied 110cc family scooter, Duet, stood at the fifth position in the top selling scooters’ list for June 2016. The model garnered sales of 24,017 units last month, down by more than 9,000 units as compared to its sales in May 2016.
Continuing to fetch stable sales, Yamaha’s best-selling scooter model, 113cc Fascino ranked sixth with sales of 18,415 units in June 2016. Suzuki’s popular 125cc Access models, however, sold 14,928 units last month, thus occupying the seventh position in the said list. The company, which now has SajeevRajasekharan on board as the new executive vice president – sales and after-sales, is currently addressing the potential mechanical glitches in the rear-axle assembly area of the new Access 125 models under its recent vehicle-recall exercise.

Yamaha’s 113cc Ray siblings continue to fetch stable sales month-on-month. The Ray models sold 13,367 units in June 2016, thereby ranking eighth in the elite list.
Making a comeback into the top-selling scooters list, Hero’s 102cc Pleasure, positioned at young female riders, stood ninth and sold 12,226 units last month. Hero Pleasure ranked as the fifth best-selling scooter model for FY2015-16 with average sales of more than 15,000 units per month.
Honda’s urban scooter, 110cc Aviator ranked the tenth bestseller with sales of 7,467 units last month.
