The Indian scooter market is setting new landmarks with every passing month. August 2016, which recorded total sales of 567,782 scooters (+32.92% YoY), saw Honda Activa sales soar to new heights even as the TVS Jupiter, the second bestselling scooter, crossed the 50,000-unit sales mark for the first time during any month.
That said, other popular scooter models such as Hero’s Maestro, Honda’s Dio, Suzuki’s Access and Yamaha’s Ray also registered a surge in their monthly volumes in August 2016.
The Honda Activa went home to 280,790 buyers last month, undoubtedly making it not only the bestselling scooter but also the highest selling two-wheeler in India for the eighth month in a row. The strongest scooter brand added sales of 62,971 units over August 2015’s 217,819 units, to notch impressive YoY growth of 28.91 percent.

The TVS Jupiter reported total sales of 51,728 units during August 2016, a YoY growth of 10.97 percent (August 2015: 46,614). The growth trajectory of the TVS scooter highlights its gradual and consistent growth unlike the buoyant sales volumes of other popular models. While the Jupiter sold around 43,000 units during April and May, it posted increased sales of around 46,000 units during June and July. Market demand building up to the festive season is understood to reflect on the previously stabilised monthly volumes. It is estimated that top-selling models including the Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter, Honda Dio, Hero Maestro, Suzuki Access, Yamaha Ray and Fascino will record a sharp uptick in their monthly volumes for September and October 2016 as the festive season comes into play in India.
At No. 3 spot in August is the Hero Maestro, which sold 37,397 units, up by 18.49 percent YoY. Not far behind is the Honda Dio, a favourite among young urbanites and collegians, which sold a total of 35,479 units last month, up by a sharp 81.61 percent YoY.
The Hero Duet ranks fifth with sales of 28,364 units while the Suzuki Access, which saw a sharp surge in its month-on-month sales volumes for August 2016, reported sales of 24,904 units (+37.67 percent YoY) was sixth in the list. The Suzuki Access had reported monthly volumes in the range of 13,000-14,000 units during June and July 2016.
In another rare month, Yamaha’s Ray scooter volumes have beaten its bestselling Fascino by a close margin, thanks to the demand for the recently launched Ray-ZR. At number seven, the Yamaha Ray reported total sales of 20,782 units for August 2016, which marks YoY growth of 75.15 percent.
Ranking as the eighth bestselling scooter model in India, the Yamaha Fascino sold 18,876 units during August 2016, up by 40.05 percent YoY (August 2015: 13,478 units) and has now stabilised at the monthly volumes of 18,000-19,000 units.

The Hero Pleasure, with sales of 15,254 units, occupies ninth position in the Top 10 scooters list for August. This though is the sole model to have reported a YoY decline among all the other models. The model had sold 15,826 units in August 2015.

Honda’s Aviator, sold majorly in the urban pockets, ranked 10th with sales of 11,016 units during August 2016. The model sold 9,436 units in August last year. Notably, for the most part of the year, the monthly sales of Aviator range between 8,000 units to 12,000 units, thus making it a decent and stable performer for the company.
