INDIA SALES: Top 10 Passenger Vehicles in August 2016
Renault Kwid crosses 10,000 units sales mark, Vitara Brezza keeps its place in Top 10.
August 2016 turned out to an august month for the Indian passenger vehicle industry as improved buyer sentiment ahead of the festive season and growing rural demand on the back of a good monsoon reflected in the stellar sales performance.
PV sales rose at a rapid pace of 16.7% during the month, thanks to a staggering growth of over 47% in UV sales. Once again, recently launched models were among the big sales drivers, as has been the case for many months now.
Even as Maruti Suzuki’s Alto dominated at No. 1 spot with sales of 20,919 units, it was new models like the Vitara Brezza (9,554 units) and the Baleno (8,671 units) which provided a strong momentum to the carmaker’s domestic sales.
Despite slowing sales of compact cars, the quartet of the Alto, Dzire, Wagon R and Swift reclaimed the top four spots in the list during August, thus maintaining the carmaker’s dominance on the PV market.

The Dzire (including the Tour edition) sold 15,776 units in the month followed by the Wagon R (14,571 units) and the Swift (13,027 units). The Vitara Brezza and the Baleno took the eighth and the ninth spots, respectively to round off Maruti’s tally of seven models in the Top 10.

Hyundai Motor India’s Grand i10 (12,957 units) and the Elite i20 (11,011 units) maintained their strong sales momentum to capture the fifth and the sixth spots in August. The Creta (8,450 units) became the third model from the Korean carmaker’s stable to enter the Top 10 list in August, albeit at the last spot.

The Renault Kwid (10,719 units), which was at No. 7, drove past 10,000 unit sales for the first time ever since its launch in October last year. The company recently launched the Alto-rival with the option of a new 1.0-litre engine, which is not only expected to boost sales in the coming months but will also bode well for the French carmaker in its bid to take on Maruti Suzuki in the entry-level segment.
