The competition in the booming scooter market in India is intensifying with every passing month as the companies roll out new models (Hero Maestro Edge, Hero Duet, Yamaha Fascino), new upgrades (Suzuki Access) and new variants (Yamaha Ray ZR) to keep the sales counters ringing.
While it’s no surprise that the Honda Activa leads the charge with its insurmountable sales proportions, TVS Motor (Jupiter) and Hero MotoCorp (Maestro range) continue to battle for No. 2 two slot.
The struggle continues for the next two positions down the order as well in the Top 10 best-selling scooters between Yamaha, Hero and Suzuki, as each OEM strives for a bigger share than its rival.
In February 2016, the Honda Activa maintained its top position with total consolidated sales of 210,028 units, the brand growing by a healthy 18.34 percent YoY (February 2015: 177,475 units).
TVS Jupiter and Hero Maestro occupied the second and third slot respectively. While the Jupiter reported sales of 47,712 units, the Maestro clocked sales of 42,851 units last month. Compared to February 2016, January had seen the Maestro outsell the Jupiter for the number two position.
Consolidating its position month-on-month, the Duet – Hero’s all-new family scooter – which primarily rivals the Honda Activa and Suzuki’s Access, sold 31,456 units and held the position of fourth best-selling scooter in India for February 2016.

Yamaha’s bestselling scooter model – the 113cc Fascino – which targets young customers looking for a fashionable and stylish machine, sold 17,034 units last month. It ranked fifth on the Top 10 list for the month.
Hero’s stolid Pleasure, which is positioned as a scooter for young females, continues to rake in impressive sales every month. It sold 13,849 units and occupied sixth spot in the elite list of bestselling scooters. The Hero Pleasure had sold 24,564 units in February 2015.
Seventh was Suzuki’s Access, Honda Activa’s oldest rival in the Indian scooter market, reported sales of 13,189 units during the month. Having launched an upgraded Access model at the 2016 Auto Expo, Suzuki Motorcycle India expects to regain some lost ground in the scooter market in the coming months.
Honda’s Dio fetched sales of 10,243 units during February, down by a sizable 50.54 percent YoY. The company had sold 20,709 units of the Dio scooter in February 2015.
The Honda Aviator, on the other hand, has remained consistent with its monthly sales YoY. The Aviator sold 9,045 units last month as against sales of 10,389 units in February 2015.
Yamaha’s Ray ranked closed the Top 10 list with sales of 7,357 units during the month.
