Exclusive: Maruti Fronx is first Nexa SUV to hit 300,000 sales
Baleno-based Maruti Fronx becomes the first premium SUV from the Nexa channel to achieve cumulative sales of 300,000 units in the domestic market, and in less than two years after launch. With 166,216 units, 23% YoY growth and a lead of 42,370 units over the Grand Vitara, the Fronx maintains its position as the best-selling Nexa SUV in FY2025.
The Maruti Fronx has driven past the 300,000-unit wholesales in the Indian passenger vehicle and SUV market. With this, the premium Baleno-based compact SUV becomes the first Nexa-marketed SUV to achieve this sales milestone. What’s more, the 300,000-units mark has come in less than two years after this model’s launch on April 23, 2023 – 23 months and 9 days to be precise.
The sales run to the latest milestone has been rapid. The Fronx clocked 100,000 sales in just 10 months, 150,000 units in 14 months, 200,000 in 17 months and now 300,000 in a little over 23 months. The last 100,000 units have been sold in only seven months.
As per SIAM’s wholesales data numbers, the Maruti Fronx had sold a total of 134,735 units in FY2024, its first full year of sales when it averaged monthly dispatches of 11,228 units. The ‘run rate’ got much better in FY2025 – the 166,216 units are a strong 23% YoY increase and translate into average monthly sales of 13,851 units.
The last 12 months' wholesales data reveals that demand for the Fronx improved in the last three quarters in FY2025. While Q1 FY2025 (36,655 units) was down 9% on Q1 FY2024 (40,342 units), Q2 FY2025 (37,186 units) was a 1.44% improvement over Q1, and Q3 (42,053 units) a 13% increase over Q2. Q4 FY2025 (50,322 units) was up 20% on the previous quarter, wrapping up a stellar fiscal for the Fronx.
The Fronx has outpaced Nexa sibling Grand Vitara for the second straight year. In FY2025, the Fronx with 166,216 units has sold 42,270 units more than the Grand Vitara (123,946 units).
FRONX BEATS GRAND VITARA TO THE 300,000 MARK
The Fronx’s robust performance in FY2025, despite being part of the ultra-competitive compact SUV segment, sees it move two ranks higher in the Top 15 Utility Vehicle Table. In FY2025, the Fronx is ranked No. 5 UV, after the Tata Punch, Hyundai Creta, Maruti Ertiga and Brezza, and has improved upon its No. 7 ranking in FY2024.
Within Maruti Suzuki’s utility vehicle stable, the Fronx (166,216 units) is the third best-selling product after the Ertiga (190,974 units), Brezza (189,163 units) and ahead of the Grand Vitara (123,946 units), XL6 (37,111 units), Jimny (8,740 units) and the Invicto (4,036 units).
In FY2025, Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 720,186 UVs, up 12% YoY (FY2024: 642,296 UVs) to which the Fronx contributed 23%, improving upon its FY2024 share of 21 percent. While the Grand Vitara, which was launched six months before the Fronx in September 2022, was the first to hit the 200,000 milestone, the younger Nexa sibling has pipped it to the 300,000 mark.
FY2025 sees the Fronx maintain its position as Nexa’s second highest-selling model after its donor model, the Baleno. In FY2024, with 134,735 units, the Fronx was the second highest-selling Nexa model and also the best-selling Nexa SUV, with the Grand Vitara selling 121,169 units.
Notably, the Fronx’s sales performance should be viewed in the contest of the highly competitive compact SUV market that it is part of. This segment includes models like the Tata Punch and Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Exter, Mahindra 3XO, Kia Sonet as well as the Toyota Taisor, which has clocked sales of 32,378 units in its first year. The Toyota Taisor is the rebadged Fronx produced by Maruti Suzuki for Toyota Kirloskar Motor.
STYLISH AND PRACTICAL COMPACT SUV WITH PETROL AND CNG POWER
The good-looking Fronx coupe-crossover has a strong road presence, what with it being based on the snazzy Baleno hatchback and sporting frontal design elements like the upright nose and split headlamp that look similar to the Grand Vitara midsize SUV.
While the 17-inch multi-spoke alloys are unique to Fronx, Baleno-like features include the rising waistline with a prominent hunch over the rear wheels, and the sloping roofline. Dimension-wise too, the Fronx is Baleno-like: length at 3995mm, height at 1550mm and width at 1765mm.
The Maruti Fronx is powered by an efficient 1.2 petrol which produces 90hp and 113 Nm torque, and a 1.0 turbo-petrol. The Boosterjet turbo-petrol engine, which develops 100hp and 147Nm, is paired to either a five-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic.
Three months after the launch of the petrol-engined Fronx, Maruti Suzuki launched the CNG avatar of the Fronx, which has given a boost to sales. The Fronx CNG, with 77.5hp and 98.5 Nm, is claimed to deliver fuel efficiency of 28.51 km/kg.
The Fronx is sold in five trims – Sigma, Delta, Delta+, Zeta and Alpha – and 14 variants with nine manual and four auto transmission options. Pricing starts at Rs 752,500 (ex-showroom Delhi) for the base Sigma variant and goes upwards to the top-end Alpha Turbo AT variant, which costs Rs 12.88 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
