There is no longer a fight between diesel and petrol. Demand for diesel-engined PVs has slid from 40% in FY2017 to 19% in April-August 2020, while that of petrol has jumped from 60% to 81 percent.
Demand for diesel vehicles has dropped sharply in the April-August 2020 period. In cars (from 14% to 2%), UVs (from 74% to 44%) and vans (from 16% to 3%) compared to year-ago sales.
Conversely, demand for petrol vehicles has risen in the April-August 2020 period. In cars (from 86% to 98%), UVs (from 26% to 56%) and vans (from 84% to 97%) compared to year-ago sales.

The consumer shift towards petrol is gaining pace and how. While market preference for petrol PVS are jumped from 66 to 81% in April-August 2020, demand for diesel cars has slumped from 34 to 19 percent.
