BMW Motorrad reports best-year ever, India accounts for 3.6% of global sales in 2022

BMW Motorrad, the two-wheeler arm of the BMW Group, has achieved the highest sales in its corporate history with 202,895 motorcycles and scooters handed over to customers in CY2022, which is an increase of 4.4 % compared to CY2021. BMW Motorrad remains in first place in the global premium motorcycle and scooter segment.

Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad said: "The record result in 2022 clearly proves that our attractive product range and our brand are very popular with customers. I look forward to our centenary year in 2023 with great joy and confidence."

Stable sales in Europe, India shines

Germany remains the largest single market for BMW Motorrad in 2022 with 24,129 motorcycles and scooters sold. With a record number of 21,223 vehicles handed over to customers and thus an increase of 6.7 % compared to the previous year, France, among other countries, ensured a satisfying pan-European result for BMW Motorrad.

In other regions, a number of countries ended 2022 with a record year. In Asia (46,332 units / +7.4%), both China (15,404 units / +7.7 %) and India (7,282 units / +40.3%) achieved their best results to date.

India's growing importance in the luxury two-wheeler manufacturer's global scheme of things can be seen in its increasing share of global sales. In CY2022, BMW Motorrad India contributed to 3.58% of total numbers, up from the 2.67% in 2021 and the 1.32% in 2018 (see data table below).

In India, as has been the case for the past four years, the G 310 series of bikes –  BMW G 310 R, G 310 RR and BMW G 310 GS – have been the biggest sales contributors and it was no different in 2022 albeit the range saw expansion. BMW Motorrad India’s product portfolio received a new charge in mid-2002 when it launched the third member of the 310 series – the G310 RR – on July 15. The trio of 310s commanded a share of 90% of BMW Motorrad India’s motorcycle sales in CY2022. Other popular models in the Indian market are the S 1000 RR, R 1250 GS / GSA and the C 400 GT scooter.

BMW Motorrad also saw growth in North America (20,295 units / +11%) with record sales from the USA (17,690 units +10.4%) and Latin American markets (25,480 units / +17.2%). Brazil was the front-runner, selling a record 13,051 vehicles, which represents a YoY increase of 17 percent.

R 1250 GS and GS Adventure, sporty 4-cyl bikes in demand, 310s pack a punch

The R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure boxer models achieved strong sales figures in 2022 again. With a combined total of almost 60,000 units, the two Adventure models made a significant contribution to the successful overall result.

There was also strong demand for the sports four-cylinder models, particularly the S 1000 RR which was bought by 10,000 customers globally in 2022. Together with the S 1000 R and the S 1000 XR as well as the exclusive M 1000 RR, almost 23,500 units equipped with the powerful four-cylinder engine were delivered to customers worldwide.

Thanks to the G 310 series, the company recorded strong performance in the up to 500cc segment. The single-cylinder G 310 R and G 310 GS models, which BMW Motorrad also manufactures at TVS Motor Co’s Hosur plant, continued to be enjoyed unbroken popularity in 2022. Over 24,000 units of the G 310 series were sold worldwide – 7,282 units in India and 19,099 units exported by TVS Motor Co last year. As per the company statement, “These two agile all-rounders are a permanent fixture in the BMW Motorrad portfolio and contributed to the overall success in 2022.”

Over 5,000 CE 04 e-scooters sold in first year

With almost 5,000 units already sold in the year of its market launch, the innovative e-scooter CE 04, which has a claimed range of 130km from its 8.9kWh lithium-ion battery, three riding modes, traction control and dual-channel ABS, sent out a clear signal – the future of urban mobility is electric.

In December 2022, BMW Motorrad showcased the zero-emission BMW on two wheels in New Delhi.
