TVS Indeon expands battery production in Chennai, doubling capacity to meet rising demand for EV battery packs.
TVS Indeon Ltd., a subsidiary of Lucas TVS Ltd., inaugurated its expanded battery pack production facility at SIPCOT Industrial Park in Gummidipoondi, Chennai on Friday. The facility aims to double daily production to 1,000 battery packs and employ over 200 people with the introduction of second shift operations.
The expansion was inaugurated by Smt. D Sneha, Executive Director of SIPCOT, TIDAL, and TIDCO, along with Mr. K. N. Radhakrishnan, Director & CEO of TVS Motor Company. Mr. T. K. Balaji, Chairman of TVS Indeon, and Mr. Arvind Balaji, Director of TVS Indeon, were also present at the event.
The plant, which began operations in 2024 with a production capacity of 1 GWh and potential to manufacture 1,500 battery packs daily, is expected to reach maximum capacity by March 2026. The company currently supplies exclusively to TVS Motor Company.
"This expansion marks a key step in our journey towards producing affordable e-mobility solutions with improved quality and safety," said T.K. Balaji, Chairman & Managing Director of Lucas-TVS Ltd. and TVS Indeon Ltd.
The facility will address growing demand for lithium-ion battery packs in e-mobility and energy storage segments. TVS Indeon's expansion aligns with India's goal to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2070.
Lucas TVS Ltd., the parent company, is a manufacturing leader in the automotive components industry with a group turnover exceeding Rs. 7,000 crore. The company has been operating for over six decades, supplying components to all segments of the auto industry.
The Lucas TVS Group has been diversifying into electric mobility components as India pushes for greater adoption of electric vehicles. The government has implemented various initiatives including the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to boost domestic manufacturing of advanced automotive technology products.
The expansion comes at a time when India is working to reduce dependency on imported battery cells and develop domestic manufacturing capabilities for the entire EV supply chain.
